The third thing to consider is the quality and the quantity of the backlinks that the leading sites in the search results have for the keyword your targeting. This can give you a rough idea of how hard it will be to get to the top of the search engine results pages.
Example keyword research
Say you had an online store selling guitars and you wanted to know the best keywords to target to generate more traffic and more sales. The majority of people would target a keyword such as “buy guitars online” but this keyword only generates 480 UK searches a month and the average backlinks to get the top spot for this keyword are 8508! Clearly a lot of people are targeting “buy guitars online” and are either getting little or no traffic for this keyword.
Two keywords that would be worth targeting are “buy a guitar” 40,500 UK searches a month! Average links needed 8! And “to buy guitar” 40,500 UK searches a month! Average links needed 288! Both these keywords would be worth targeting if you had an online shop selling guitars because they would generate traffic and the number of links needed to get to the top wouldn’t take too long to build.
As you can see it would be easy to target the wrong keywords that would generate little to no traffic but choosing the right keywords and targeting them the correct way can generate huge numbers of traffic and increase potential leads/sales.
